Bambi Effect

Decision-Making and Judgment Biases

The Bambi effect is a bias in attitudes toward animal welfare and wildlife management in which people strongly object to the killing or suffering of animals they personally find endearing, while showing little or no similar concern for animals perceived as less appealing or attractive. The name refers to Walt Disney's 1942 animated film Bambi, whose emotional turning point is the death of the title character's mother at the hands of an unseen hunter, and the effect is treated as a form of anthropomorphism, projecting human-like sympathy onto animals based on how relatable or lovable they appear rather than on any ecological or welfare-based standard. The bias has been credited with raising public concern in cases such as the reaction to sea otters affected by the Exxon Valdez oil spill, but it can also work against sound wildlife management, generating public resistance to necessary culls of invasive species that happen to be seen as cute, and it has been linked to reduced consumer demand for whole fish and other foods that visibly resemble the living animal.
