Conditioned suppression is a classical conditioning phenomenon in which an animal reduces or halts an ongoing operant behavior, such as pressing a lever for food, when a conditioned stimulus previously paired with an aversive event, such as an electric shock, is presented. Because the drop in responding is used as an indirect measure of the animal's learned fear of the conditioned stimulus, the procedure has become a standard tool for studying fear conditioning in behavioral and neuroscience research.
