Trace conditioning is a classical conditioning procedure in which the conditioned stimulus ends before the unconditioned stimulus begins, leaving a gap, or trace interval, between the two, unlike delay conditioning where the two stimuli overlap. Because the brain must hold a memory trace of the conditioned stimulus across that gap to form the association, trace conditioning is used by researchers to study forms of learning that depend on working memory and, unlike delay conditioning, on structures such as the hippocampus.
