Context-Dependent Memory

Context-dependent memory is the tendency for recall of a specific episode or piece of information to improve when the surrounding context present during learning matches the context present during recall. The idea is that when something is stored in memory, contextual details are stored alongside it, so encountering that same context later can cue the original memory back into awareness, a pattern often illustrated by how a lost item becomes easiest to find once a person mentally or physically retraces the steps that led up to losing it. Researchers distinguish several related forms of the effect, including environmental context-dependent memory, state-dependent learning tied to a person's internal state, cognitive context-dependent memory, and mood-congruent memory, and the phenomenon has been shown to matter both for recalling studied material and for recalling events that occurred while a person was under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
