Astereognosis

Astereognosis, also called tactile agnosia when it affects only one hand, is a neurological condition in which a person cannot identify objects by touch alone despite having intact basic sensation of touch, position and temperature. A person with astereognosis cannot recognize an object's texture, size, shape or temperature with their eyes closed, even though the same object is easily recognized by sight, and while they may manage very simple shapes such as a sphere or pyramid, they typically fail to identify ordinary objects by their distinguishing tactile features. The condition results from damage to the parietal lobe, the dorsal columns of the spinal cord, or the parieto-temporo-occipital junction of either hemisphere of the brain.
