Figure-ground organization is a type of perceptual grouping that is essential for recognizing objects through vision. Gestalt psychology describes it as the process of identifying a figure as distinct from the background behind it. A commonly cited example is black text on a printed page, where the words are perceived as the figure and the white page as the background.
