Cherophobia

Clinical and Motivational Phenomena

Cherophobia is the fear or avoidance of happiness, in which a person actively resists positive emotion or pleasurable activity out of a belief that happiness invites misfortune or will be followed by disappointment. It has been discussed in some cultural and clinical contexts as related to superstitious thinking about tempting fate, and it is distinguished from ordinary pessimism by the deliberate avoidance of situations that might produce joy.
