Psychoanalytic Defense Mechanisms

In psychoanalytic theory, distortion is a pathological-level defense mechanism in which a person reshapes their perception of external reality to meet internal psychological needs, rather than adapting their internal state to match reality. It is grouped with other primitive defenses such as denial and delusional projection because it interferes with a person's basic reality testing rather than simply framing an accurate perception in a more favorable light.
