Minimization is a psychoanalytic defense mechanism in which a person downplays the significance of a problem or a conflict, treating something genuinely serious as minor or unimportant in order to reduce the distress it causes. It functions differently from denial, since the person acknowledges that the problem exists, but differs from an accurate appraisal because the scale of the problem is deliberately understated.
