John Tooby (1952-2023) was an American anthropologist who, together with his psychologist wife Leda Cosmides, pioneered the field of evolutionary psychology. The pair co-founded the Center for Evolutionary Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and co-edited the field's foundational 1992 text The Adapted Mind: Evolutionary Psychology and the Generation of Culture with Jerome Barkow.
