Kurt Lewin

Social Psychology

Kurt Lewin (1890 to 1947) was a German-born psychologist, one of the pioneers of contemporary social psychology, who was born in the town of Mogilno, which belonged to imperial Germany then and lies in Poland now, and who fled Germany for the United States when the Nazis rose to power. He trained in Berlin, where he absorbed the principles of Gestalt psychology, and went on to develop field theory, the view that behavior is determined by the forces acting in a person's immediate field. His work on group process, leadership and action research helped found the study of group dynamics, and he is widely remembered as the father of social psychology.
