Ignacio Martin-Baro was a social psychologist, philosopher and Jesuit priest, born in Spain and based for most of his career in El Salvador, known for developing liberation psychology, an approach that argued psychology should be oriented toward the lived experience and liberation of oppressed communities rather than treating Western models as universal. He was murdered in 1989 along with five fellow Jesuits and two others in the massacre at the University of Central America in San Salvador during the Salvadoran civil war, a killing carried out by a Salvadoran army unit.
