Matataro Matsumoto

Matataro Matsumoto was a Japanese psychologist who set up the first psychological laboratory in Japan and has been described as the most eminent figure in the early history of Japanese psychology. He founded the Japanese Journal of Psychology and the Japanese Psychological Association. He studied in Tokyo under Japan's first academic psychologist, Yujiro Motora, then earned a doctorate at Yale University under Edward Wheeler Scripture, before teaching at the Tokyo Higher Normal School, setting up Japan's second psychology laboratory at Kyoto University, and eventually taking over the psychology program at Tokyo Imperial University after Motora's death.
