Carl Jung (1875-1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychologist who founded analytical psychology after breaking from Freud's psychoanalysis. His system centers on the collective unconscious and universal archetypal patterns rather than sexual instinct as the psyche's primary driver. His writing spanned psychiatry, anthropology, mythology, and religious studies, and he remained intellectually active until his death in Kusnacht at age 85.
