Emotionally Focused Therapy

Clinical Psychology

Emotionally focused therapy, also called emotion-focused therapy (EFT), is a humanistic approach to psychotherapy that aims to resolve emotional and relationship difficulties for individuals, couples and families. It combines experiential techniques drawn from person-centered and Gestalt therapy with systemic therapy and attachment theory, on the premise that emotions influence cognition, motivate behavior and are closely tied to a person's needs. Treatment aims to transform maladaptive patterns such as emotional avoidance while building awareness, acceptance, expression and regulation of emotion and a clearer understanding of relationships, usually over a short-term course of treatment.
