An earworm is a catchy or memorable piece of music, most often a song, that continuously occupies a person's mind even after it has stopped playing. The formal term for the experience is involuntary musical imagery, a kind of unwanted cognitive intrusion in which a musical sequence spontaneously replays in a person's consciousness without deliberate effort to bring it there. The experience is not limited to songs with lyrics, though music that includes words accounts for the large majority of reported cases.
