Confusional arousal, also known as sleep drunkenness or severe sleep inertia, is a state in which a person awakened from sleep shows mental confusion lasting at least several minutes, sometimes with complete or partial amnesia for the episode afterward. Like the related and already-documented phenomena of sleep paralysis and exploding head syndrome, it is one of the parasomnias, the family of disruptive sleep-related behaviors and experiences that occur around the boundary between sleep and waking.
