Agent Detection Bias

Agent detection bias is a cognitive bias in which humans and other animals readily assume that events are caused by a sentient or intentional agent even when they are not. The psychologists Kurt Gray and Daniel Wegner described the underlying cognitive tendency as a hyperactive agent detection device, a mental module that readily attributes ambiguous events to an agent's action, reasoning that the high cost of failing to detect a real agent, such as a predator, together with the low cost of a false alarm, favors erring toward assuming an agent is present. The trait is generally understood as an evolved survival mechanism: encountering an ambiguous cue, such as an unusual indentation that might be a predator's footprint, and responding as though an agent caused it maximizes the chance of avoiding a real threat, since a missed genuine danger is typically far costlier than an unnecessary precaution. Some researchers have proposed that belief in supernatural or divine agents may be a non-adaptive byproduct of this otherwise adaptive detection mechanism, though they note that additional cognitive capacities, such as a theory of mind, are also needed to conceive of a deity.
