Chaining (Behavior Analysis)

Learning and Conditioning Phenomena

Chaining is a behavior-analytic technique for teaching a sequence of responses in which completing each step signals the start of the next step and is itself reinforced by that signal, ending in a final terminal reward. In forward chaining the steps are taught in their natural order, while in backward chaining the learner is taught the last step first, so that every earlier step added to the chain ends in an outcome the learner has already mastered. The method is widely used in applied behavior analysis to teach multi-step skills such as personal care routines.
