In classical conditioning, disinhibition is the temporary recovery of an extinguished conditioned response after an intense but otherwise neutral stimulus occurs alongside the conditioned stimulus. It works in the opposite direction from external inhibition's suppressive effect, restoring a response that had previously been trained away rather than blocking one that would otherwise occur, and it is studied as evidence that an extinguished response is suppressed rather than erased from memory.
