Novelty Effect

Learning and Conditioning Phenomena

The novelty effect is the effect that introducing a new element has on behavior or performance in some activity. In performance settings it describes an initial boost that appears when new technology is introduced, driven by heightened interest rather than genuine skill improvement, and in learning settings it describes a temporary rise in engagement following the introduction of a new instructional tool, a rise that typically fades as the novelty wears off and a learner's underlying motivation reasserts itself.
