Subliminal Perception

Subliminal perception refers to the processing of sensory stimuli that fall below a person's threshold for conscious awareness, meaning the stimulus is received by the senses and can influence the brain without the person ever becoming consciously aware of having perceived it. Visual subliminal stimuli are typically produced by flashing content too briefly for conscious processing or by masking it with other visual content that interrupts perception, while subliminal auditory stimuli may be played at a volume too low to be consciously heard or embedded beneath other, louder sounds. Scientific research has established that such stimuli can produce measurable effects in the brain even without conscious awareness: a 2012 review of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies found that subliminal stimuli activate specific brain regions despite participants' unawareness of them, a finding reinforced by a 2023 meta-analysis examining subliminal stimulation in the context of post-traumatic stress disorder. Despite this documented neural activation, the practical, behavioral effects of subliminal stimuli are limited: research indicates they can only influence a person's actions when that person is already predisposed toward the behavior in question, for example a subliminal cue related to drinking affecting only someone who is already thirsty, and broad claims about subliminal messaging swaying consumer purchasing decisions have not been supported, with studies finding the effect on actual purchasing behavior to be statistically insignificant.
