Anna Freud (1895-1982) was an Austrian-British psychoanalyst, the youngest child of Sigmund Freud, who pioneered child psychoanalysis and founded ego psychology with her 1936 study of the ego's defense mechanisms, shifting psychoanalytic attention from the unconscious id toward the ego's active, adaptive functions.
