Girindrasekhar Bose

Girindrasekhar Bose was an early twentieth century Indian psychoanalyst and the first president of the Indian Psychoanalytic Society, a position he held from 1922 until 1953. He carried on a twenty year correspondence with Sigmund Freud and is known for disputing specific elements of Freud's Oedipus complex theory, work that some scholars point to as an early example of non-Western contestation of Western psychoanalytic theory. He also started the first general hospital psychiatry unit in Asia, at the R.G. Kar Medical College in Calcutta in 1933.
